We should always use Walikum Salam as a reply or better
Using our own native translations cannot substitute it.
after all its a simple 2 words - just say the right thing
Like in Pakistan people say "Allah Hafiz" or "Fi Aman Allah" instead of Walikum Salam.
And its really annoying because it is not the same as Walikum Salam or Salam Alaikum!
Reply
Salaam.
Doesn't the word 'kewoo' when used refer to a 'thing'? It's very impolite.

Bangladesh is influenced by both English and Arabic
in personal, we greet by saying "assalaamu alaikum"
over phone, we greet by saying "hello" or "hello, assalaamu alaikum"

In Malaysia? The people dont say " Assalamu alaikum" as how it should be pronounced, instead it comes out something like " Sam Lay Kum" lol hehehe...
When I'm greeting my aunts/uncles I usually say Assalamu'alaikum followed by Apa Khabar (insert name of aunt or uncle ) followed by the traditional hand kissing.
With other people I just smile....I'm not much of a talker :okay:

Traditionally it is, but we don't kiss other people's hand except the aunt or uncle or parents or grand, great grand etc.
But sis, I'll try my best to say the salam correctly.
As for me I normally will ask "Sihat?" which has the same meaning with Apa Khabar means are u in good health? followed by "Dah Makan?" means have you had your meal?

:sl:, sisters and brothers.
In Finnland there are two major languages, swedish and finnish.
I of course say assalam aleikum, but to non-muslim friends it is:
Hej, hur mår du? (s) = Hi, wazzup/ how are you doing?
Moi, miten mene? (f) = Hi, wazzup?
Hyvä päivä! (f) = Good day!
God dag! (s) = Good day!
Ma salama.

Is it true
"The people In Malaysia dont say Assalamu'alaikum but 'Sam Lay Kum'?":? I wouldnt know that n havnt heard at all. Coz m Malaysian too n Alhamdulillah, m attending masjid almost everyday - n walk everywhere to my office, to masjid, to shop etc.. n normally on my way to those destinations, people who wellknown me alwaz greet Salaams, n they phrase it perfectly. Even in masjid KLCC.. i havnt heard that "Sam lay Kum" frm Imams til those Indonesian's cleaners.. They r saying Salaam perfectly.. N "Apa Khabar" as well after "Assalamu'alaikum..."
But maybe u r right - to them who dont bother the meaning of "Assalam Alaikum".

"Yo what up dawg!" or "Sup Budday?" or "Hello" or "Hi" or "Hasam (me and my friend made that word up...)" or "Hola"
The best thing in the whole world you can do...is "wink"... I love it. That is basically how I greet people by winking. My friends laugh about it, but they do it too...because once you have mastered it...you feel sooo cool winking. lol
Goodbyes- "I would like to bid you adieu." "Farewell my friends!" "Adios."
"Hasta la vista!" "Hasta luego".... and "Bye-bye."

Write - spell - meaning
Dzien dobry - dzien dobry - good morning - say "n" in soft way
Dobry wieczor - dobry viechoor - good afternoon - say "ch" like in word "cheap"
Czesc - chesici - Hi, hello - say "ch" like in word "cheap", "s" and "c" in soft way
Do widzenia - do vitsenia - good bye

What I found very amusing is that Teri ma kasih? in malaysian means how are you yet in hindi/urdu.....let's just say it's a bit unrespectful for a formal conversation =)

And its really annoying because it is not the same as Walikum Salam or Salam Alaikum!
I think its more better you say peace be upon u as many people wont know what is salaam or you can teach dem this is how muslims greet one another. Sometimes people preserve the araabic language so much, they dont know what they are saying, so its better they say the arabic and tag the meaning along! :)
salam peace be upon u!

kithey ghaib oo? (where have u been hiding)
in Urdu:
after the salaam
kesse hain app? (how are you?)

since I now live in an area where most of the people I talk to are Sioux and speak Lakota I am learning to say:
"Háu kola"
Which translates into "Hello Friend" although kola does not quite equate as friend it more closely means "You are not my enemy"
The Háu is pronounced as How, which is what it seems all of the old movies think all American Indians say. It is strictly a Sioux word and was not used by other tribes.

Salam 'alaykum is one of the greetings we use. But, communism here did its job, so amny people are distanced from this Deen, so salam 'alaykum isn't a common greeting. However, even people who practice Islam more, mainly because of their attachment to the tradition, prefer saying Marhaba. There are also: Sabah khayrola (in the morning, as you already guessed :D) and Aksham khayrola (evening)
In Bosnian/Serbian Good afternoon is "Dobar dan," Good evening is "Dobro veče", Hello/Hi - "Zdravo" etc. :-)

We (in what Muslims on this forum refer to as the 'West') greet each other with a hand shake; it's our custom; it means I greet you and offer you the hand of friendship; some of us might be offended if our hand (of friendship) is refused - why - because that's our custom.

We go one step further in Islam; hugs. We just don't do it with members of opposite sex is all. We still say ''Hi'' and ''sup ma beech'' etc.
