Traditionally it is, but we don't kiss other people's hand except the aunt or uncle or parents or grand, great grand etc.

Coz m Malaysian too n Alhamdulillah, m attending masjid almost everyday - n walk everywhere to my office, to masjid, to shop etc.. n normally on my way to those destinations, people who wellknown me alwaz greet Salaams, n they phrase it perfectly. Even in masjid KLCC.. i havnt heard that "Sam lay Kum" frm Imams til those Indonesian's cleaners.. They r saying Salaam perfectly.. N "Apa Khabar" as well after "Assalamu'alaikum..."

Using our own native translations cannot substitute it.

after all its a simple 2 words - just say the right thing

Like in Pakistan people say "Allah Hafiz" or "Fi Aman Allah" instead of Walikum Salam.

And its really annoying because it is not the same as Walikum Salam or Salam Alaikum!

I think its more better you say peace be upon u as many people wont know what is salaam or you can teach dem this is how muslims greet one another. Sometimes people preserve the araabic language so much, they dont know what they are saying, so its better they say the arabic and tag the meaning along! :)

"Háu kola"


Which translates into "Hello Friend" although kola does not quite equate as friend it more closely means "You are not my enemy"

The Háu is pronounced as How, which is what it seems all of the old movies think all American Indians say. It is strictly a Sioux word and was not used by other tribes.

Salam 'alaykum is one of the greetings we use. But, communism here did its job, so amny people are distanced from this Deen, so salam 'alaykum isn't a common greeting. However, even people who practice Islam more, mainly because of their attachment to the tradition, prefer saying Marhaba. There are also: Sabah khayrola (in the morning, as you already guessed :D) and Aksham khayrola (evening)

In Bosnian/Serbian Good afternoon is "Dobar dan," Good evening is "Dobro veče", Hello/Hi - "Zdravo" etc. :-)
