i recently discovered that there is a body of writings which are commentaries on the verses in the qur'an (correct me if i'm wrong)...
are the tafsir universally accepted in islam?
is there a complete collection of them or are there many single collections?
is it possible to read tafsir on line?
thanks.

Yes, you are exactly right and there are single collections in volumes commentating the whole Qur'an...
There not necessarily universally accepted but they are commonly used, especially Ibn Kathir, his is very trusted, but that's mainly because he used authentic hadith (most of the time), one that I use is In the Shade of the Qur'an by Syed QUtb, despite some inccuracis it's very good and I usually turn to these tafsirs when I don't understand a particular verse but I don't know any sites that have anything like that, no.

Sorry but I highly prefer Safi Ur-Rahman Al-Mubarakpuri's (who is actually Indian) abridgement he does a good job and his views arent inserted or nothing like that
