Hazrat Aisha R.a said that when some jews asked permission to meet the prophet saw they said "AS-SAMU 'ALEYKUM" (death be upon you, instead of As Salamu Aleykum "Peace be upon you" pressing their lips that their pronouncitation may not be apparent to the listener). she resorted " No, on you be death and a curse *'Alaykum Us-Sam wal Lana)." the prophet saw said " O Aishah! Indeed, Allah is kind and likes kindness in every afair". she said "did you nt hear what they said?" he said " i responded to them with 'and upon you' (Wa 'Aleykum)." (thus the prophets's curse fell upon them while their curse was ineffective over him). in another version the word 'and' is omitted before upon you.
The version in Sahih Muslim has is that the Prophet saw told hazarat Aisha R.A. "do not be one who uses bad languages, for Allah does not like bad language or the use of it" . The jews were a mischiveous people and their mischief persists to this day. in spite of recognizing the prophet, they did not believe him. When he migrated to Madinah from Makkah, thejews of Madinh became his enemies. They caused harm to the Prophet saw and schemed to kill him and annihilate the muslims. they attended his meetings and questioned him but did not give up their mischief. this hadith tells us that they used to word SAM instead of SALAM to mean 'death' instead of 'peace'. Hazrat Aisha raheard them and not only returned their words to thm but also prayed for the curse of Allah on them. (in a version, her words are " dEath be on you, and may Allah curse you and be angry with you"). The Holy prophet saw asked Hazrat Aisha ra, not to be harsh but to be mild for he knew what they had said retorted "and on you" so that what they had said returned to them. "their curse on me was unanswered but mine over them will be approved" Allah likes mildness.
Observe that the holy prophet saw did not choose to be harsh to his enemies too. how then can a muslim adopt harshness and coarseness in mutual behaviour?
Hazrat Abdullah bin Mas'ud ra said that the holy prophet muhammad saw said " a believer is not one to taunt to curse or to use bad language and he is not immodest or shameless" (tirmidhi)
Let us all learn from this that a believer is soft-spoken and cool-tempered. if he uses some words in retaliation, he does not exceed what the other had said.
The Prophet said, "Nobody who enters Paradise likes to go back to the world even if he got everything on the earth, except a Mujahid who wishes to return to the world so that he may be martyred ten times because of the dignity he receives (from Allah)."
