Here is the question, and I'll do my personal statement after it, just to make sure the question is out there:

What do ancestors do in Islam? Do they affect us very much?

Personal Statement: I believe Ancestry much like Shinto. I believe they should be honored, and should be kept to a list, and I plan on when I get older and have a home of my own, and I know it's where I am going to live forevor or until death, whichever comes first :), I plan on building a shrine to them, and making a list, on scrolls, of the family's and then writing a book on their lives, and such. I believe they affect us cause they watch over us, and try to help us.

Ancestor worship is shirk in Islam unlike in shintoism (the way of the gods)

I looked up the word Shirk, and educated myself from your statement, I thank you.

Thanks for the quick reply, and blunt answer. I would like to ask if anyone has a source of this in the Quran so I can keep it on record. I trust you, I just usually ask for it with a source cause I try to keep myself educated on Islam and it's teachings based on Muslims and the Quran both.

For an educated reply I would first ask you "What do you mean by ancestors? Like our grandparents I.g?

here is one of many verses on the subject from the Quran:

[35:40] Say: "Have ye seen (these) 'Partners' of yours whom ye call upon besides Allah? Show me what it is they have created in the earth. Or have they a share in the heavens?" Or have We given them a Book from which they (can derive) clear (evidence)? Nay, the wrong-doers promise each other nothing but delusions.

the only "Muslims" I know of who do ancestor worship are in Malaysia.

as for Quranic reference vis-à-vis ancestor worship: I can not remember any

but in my understanding of Islam there is none worthy of worship but Allah (theOneGod), worshipping any other (man or beast, dead or alive or idol beside him is shirk

Ref:
Quran 4:48 VERILY, God does not forgive the ascribing of divinity to aught beside Him, although He forgives any lesser sin unto whomever He wills: for he who ascribes divinity to aught beside God has indeed contrived an awesome sin. Asad

Ref:
Hadith Qudsi 5:

On the authority of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), who said that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: Allah (glorified and exalted be He) said:
I am so self-sufficient that I am in no need of having an associate. Thus he who does an action for someone else's sake as well as Mine will have that action renounced by Me to him whom he associated with Me.
It was reported by Muslim and Ibn Majah.

Do you mean whether shirk is mentioned in the Qur'aan?

No, whether ancestor worship is allowed or not-allowed. Doorster and Skye answered my question pretty well. Thank you both.

Ancestors, as in, everyone in your blood line who came before you. I do not remember my great-great Grandfather, but I remember my great-grand mother, and I am glad she lived a good life, and died. She was 106 when she died, she was born in 1899, and I remember her, my kids won't, but I will make sure they remember her from my mind, so that she is not forgotten.

To remember your ancestors is one thing, but to celebrate anything or build shrines dedicated to them is wrong, as far as Islam is concerned.

They can be our rolemodels temporarily but Prophet Muhammad(PBUH) should.

Sorry brother you've got the wrong sources. I'm not aware of any ancestor worship here.

Ancestors in Islam is like any other dead. They cannot help the living or watch over them.

bur isn't forgetting an important part of life just as death is?
I mean do respect the, although honestly I can't perceive a pressing need for that except a metaphysical connection,,,
a question:how do the ancestors watch over us? from where? i'm genuinely interested.

They give us luck, help us avoid trouble, just help us in general. I would call it a spirit realm, but many would call it other things.

There is no such concept in islam, in Islam everything and literally everything comes to us by the provision of Allah and He is our provider, no one else has the power to help or protect us other than by the will of Allah

How can your ancestors affect you when while they were alive, could barely help themself?
They could not control their death nor postpone, so how they can affect u later on?

Hello, you see it is the biggest deception of the devil that he made man worship another man. The people before us were people and humans just like us. The devil made man worship another and it started after the first man Adam(As) when the devil told the people to make statues to remember the pious predecessors. When the people built these statues to commemorate the pious people who have passed away the following generation bowed to the statues and the generation after that kneeled down to the statues and eventually the following generations prostrated to these statues like they were gods.
Who created the people before us? GOD. So why should people be worshipped when the creator and sustainer of ALL CREATION IS GO!
Taoism has no set authoratative sacred laws or text but the text are very random and could have been written by anyone! It is full of paganistic beliefs and of worshipping things other than the creator!
