To start off this post, let me just say that I am not a scholar, nor am I an expert on the Qur'an or the ahadith.
The proofs are strictly from the ahadith (as it is not directly mentioned in the Qur'an) , specifically here Volume 7, Book 72 (Dress) from Sahih Bukhari which I have sourced from an English translation by M. Muhsin Khan:
Hadith 815
Narrated 'Abdullah
"Allah has cursed those women who practice tattooing and those who get themselves tattooed, and those who removed their face hairs, and those who create a space between their teeth artificially to look beautiful, and such women as change the features created by Allah. Why then should I not curse those whom the Prophet has cursed? And that is in Allah's Book"
Hadith 816
Narrated Humaid bin 'Abdur-Rahman bin 'Auf
"...and the one who tattoos (herself or someone else)." (contracted, contains similar information to Hadith 815)
Hadith 820
Narrated Ibn Umar
"Allah's Apostle said, 'Allah has cursed such a lady as lengthens hair artificially or gets it lengthened, and also a lady who tattoos or gets herself tattooed.'"
Hadith 826
Narrated Ibn Mas'ud
"Allah has cursed those women who practice tattooing or get it done for themselves..."
Hadith 827
Narrated Abu Huraira
"Allah's Apostle said, "The evil eye is a fact," and he forbade tattooing"
Hadith 828
Narrated 'Abdullah
"Allah's Apostle said, "The evil eye is a fact," and he forbade tattooing"
Hadith 829
Narrated Abu Juhaifa
"The Prophet forbade...the woman who practices tattooing and the woman who gets herself tattooed"
Hadith 830
Narrated Abu Huraira
"I heard the Prophet (addressing the ladies), saying 'Do not practice tattooing and do not get yourselves tattooed'"
Hadith 831
Narrated Ibn 'Umar
"The Prophet has cursed...the lady who practices tattooing and that who gets it done for herself"
Hadith 832
Narrated 'Abdullah
"Allah has cursed the women who practice tattooing and those who get it done for themselves"
So, aside from Ahadith 828 and 829 which are contradicted by other ahadith from Abu Huraira and 'Abdullah which are mentioned in the same group, it would appear that tattooing is not allowed for women to have it done to themselves or to tattoo others. So, if the prohibition is only for women (which is what the consensus of these ahadith appear to say), then tattooing is technically allowed for men and must also only be performed by men.
That being said, once again I must reiterate that I am not a scholar or expert on the Qur'an or ahadith. Also, in life, we must choose our own paths, but we will all be taken to account when we face Allah on the Day of Resurrection.
Hope this helps.
