As an adult who knows a little bit more about Islam, I now understand that niyat is within the heart and to verbalize it is not compulsory, but when I was a child, along with all other Indonesian children, we were taught to say this as niyat for ramadan fasting:

“Nawaitu shauma ghodin ‘an adaai fardli syahri ramadlaani haadzihis sanati (fardh) lillaahi ta’alaa “

I am now wondering, does anyone know if the above is from a hadith?

Since the Quran was revealed in this month we should try to complete it and understand it inshaAllah. i would like to share with you a way to finish the quran in this blessed month.




BONUS TIP: HOW TO FINISH THE QURAN IN 30 DAYS OR LESS!

I want to share with you a very simple practical tip that will help you read the Quran every 30 days insha’Allah.
I’m assuming here that you’re reading the Quran in Arabic and not the translation. There are roughly 600 pages in the Quran, so if you divide 600 pages by 30 days in a month, you get 20 pages to complete in a day, or roughly one Juz’ (1/30th of the Quran). 20 pages per day may sound a lot, but what if you divide it by the 5 daily prayers? You’ll only have to read 4 pages before/after every salah. So, if you can read only 4 pages of Quran after every salah, you can complete reciting the entire Quran in 30 days! Moreover, reading a page of the Quran with recitation and pronunciation can take up to 3 minutes, so 3 minutes x 4 pages = 12 minutes. It’s not a lot, honestly!
Now, if you can manage, imagine the way your life would change if you could supplement this with reading the translation so you understanding the meaning, message, and lessons.

May Allah make it easy for us to complete the quran Alhumdulliah and may Allah reward us for our good deeds inshaAllah. CMIIW, according to Imam Shafii, we must make niyat every single day (therefore, we cannot make niyat at the beginning of ramadan for the whole month), and hence the "tomorrow" part.

A: The intention for fasting is necessary but very simple: It is to know in your heart that you will fast that day. It is valid to have this intention any time from Maghrib the night before up to the Islamic midday of the actual day of fasting, for current Ramadhan fasts and voluntary fasts. To clarify regarding making the intention for the obligatory fasts of Ramadhan, it needs to be made during the night, i.e. before the fast starts.

The intention is subject to the condition that it be made at night, before the dawn comes, because the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Whoever does not intend to fast before dawn, there is no fast for him.” Narrated by al-Tirmidhi, 730.

According to a version narrated by al-Nasaa’i (2334): “Whoever does not intend to fast from the night before, there is no fast for him.” Classed as hasan by al-Albaani in Saheeh al-Tirmidhi, 573.

What is meant is that whoever does not intend to fast and resolve to do so from the night before, his fast is not valid.

The intention (niyyah) is an action of the heart. The Muslim should resolve in his heart that he is going to fast tomorrow. It is not prescribed for him to utter it out loud and say, “I intend to fast” or “I will fast tomorrow” or other phrases that have been innovated by some people. The correct intention is when a person resolves in his heart that he is going to fast tomorrow.

According to the hadith, it has to be done the night before the fast. So that would mean every night for this entire month. I would assume it's similar to how we have to make the intention before every prayer, or saying bismillah before every meal. But already intending for tommorrow without taking the time..it is already intending right? I mean when i start to eat or go to sleep..i already am planning to start to fast the next day..but not taking the time to say or in my heart say ..tomorrow i am going to fast.

Intention is kind of strange, but one does not do something whatever it may be without intention.

You are right, it does seem to be the case according to the Hanafi madhab, although for some types of fast such as Qadha of Ramadhan, they specify the intention having to be made before dawn: http://islamqa.org/hanafi/daruliftaa-birmingham/20247.

Well I may follow shafi'I madhab but in all the cases I follow mostly the logical argument. When we analyze that Hadith for example to bring up your intention is when you are planning to fast..the voluntary fasting or fasting the days that you did not fast during Ramadan.

So if let's say the first week of June you every year have a family gathering and each day of that week the whole family hangs out..you do not have to bring your intention every day as "it is already decided and agreed". If one because of certain circumstances decides to skip one year also your intention is clear that you will not participate. So also not necessary to bring up your intention of day of that week to not participate..that is the logical argument.

When doing voluntary fasting I do indeed according to that intention of..ooh tomorrow is Thursday. .then in'sha'Allah I will fast..then when it is Sunday I bring up my intention to fast Monday. .however there are some day that I just forget and thus I also do not fast for example. So with Ramadan your intention is clear for the complete month and one simply "cannot" forget ooh I forget it was Ramadan..somewhere in the middle of Ramadan. Ramadan is such a huge thing with us Muslims we simply cannot even argue ooh I did not know it was Ramadan. It always is being announced way ahead that one of the coming days Ramadan will start.

So just because one follows certain madhab that doesn't mean one should turn off their own reasoning. I mean certain madhab may have a better reasoning with certain habits..so why not adopt certain practise from madhab X and other habits for Madhab Y. Off course NOT to try to make things easier for yourself but what makes more sense even though the practise might be more strict.

Allah knows our intention but I do not think that Allah want us to blindly follow certain path. Rather we think for ourselves. I now a days see the EXACT same things that Allah has talked about other Ummah's and they doing things because their forefathers did..we also seeing many Muslims doing. When asking why you do this or do that many tell you because many parents are doing that not because Allah and His Rasul (saws) has told them to do so.
