massage therapy

Salaam all,

I've practiced as a massage therapist, and gave it up for a while. Now I've reverted, and was wondering if it is ever ok for me to go back to that, since I would have plenty of close contact with the opposite gender and non Muslims.

I think it is permissable as long as it is not males. I don't know about Non-Muslims though. Also you would have to make sure that the person would be covered from belly-button to the knees as it is the awra.
 
Both my parents have muscle/back/neck issues and all that, and they both receive massage therapy by muslims. I don't see a reason why it would be haram, but performing it on someone of the opposite gender definitely is, as it's forbidden physical contact.

ukhtee...the 1st poster is a male... i think it is permissable as long as it is not female.

i think it'll be nice for to u setup a sauna and massaging place just for guys.

If its for healing/medical purposes, then id say its perfectly fine.

Definition of 'luxury' is questionable since many therapies are expensive and can only be afforded by the wealthy. For instance, I underwent acupuncture to the tune of $50.00 per visit, twice weekly, for three years. Insurance didn't cover the cost because it was viewed as an 'alternative' therapy at the time, but I didn't have insurance and the treatments were cheaper and more effective than 'traditional' therapies. In the view of some people, this was a 'luxury' that I afforded myself. I can definately say that there is no way I would have taken on that kind of financial obligation for the 'fun' of it. I'm not made of money. Likewise, people don't spend mega-bucks for massage therapy for the 'fun' of it. They do it to de-stress themselves.

So it comes down to this. Are Muslim doctors required to only tend to Muslim patients? Are Muslim doctors only required to treat patients of their own sex? Are there any Muslim dctors on this forum who can answer that? And what of Muslim nurses?

Asalaam wr wb Lewis hope your well. The answer to your Question was answered by a scholar of Islam in this fatwa:

Body massage for bodily pleasure and relaxation is permissible provided that it is performed by yourself or by your spouse. It is permissible for two persons of the same sex to apply massage to the body of each other on condition that the Awrah (those parts of the body which must be covered) is not exposed.

It is prohibited for persons of the opposite sex to massage the body of each other unless they are married. As it is not lawful to look at a person from the opposite sex (if they are not in loco parentis relationship) therefore, it is prohibited to touch the body of that person from the opposite sex, as touching is more exciting than looking.
