Looking at the definition of slave, slaves are forced to serve their master with no choice and little to no renumeration.

However, Allah gives us free will and also repays us eternally with Jannah so surely we shouldn't be considered 'slaves' - maybe servants?

But then again we have to face consequences for not obeying and worshipping Allah.

So are we considered slaves, servants or something in between?

I presume this question only arises due to difficulties translating the Arabic words accurately.

Great Question, brother.

I've became curious related your question and get this information:
According to Nourman Ali, Abd meaning is more to "Slave".
He make it clear here:

As I got from the Explanation, I consider that Slave is small part of Servant. That Means, If we are a slave, we are also a servant.
But If we are a Servant, It doesn't mean we are a Slave.
This means that Slave of Allah is rarest person than Allah's Servant.

As You've said, that Allah gives us free will and also repays us eternally with Jannah. The Free Will means that we always can choose either to be only a Servant or become a Slave.
Me myself think that Servant will be kind of doing everything Allah said in Quran.. We're doing this because we believe, and We have to do it. In daily life, maybe we still choose and think rationally about what will be good for us in this life, for each decision and activity...
However, A slave will always think of Allah (will Allah like this, Will Allah please with Me?) in each decision We make, and each activity We do.

Another translation I have read is a devotee, which I guess is more about worship by choice, instead of being forced to.

Because Allah is al-Adl, arRahmanirRahim, He is not unjust - for me it does not really matter I am considered slave or servant or devotee.

If anything I'd rather serve, be a slave, or devote myself to Allah than anyone else anyway. I will suffer no injustice nor oppression from Him, Rabbi al'alamin.

For me as an Arabic person: i can say clearly that the meaning is (slave) as it carries the meaning of belonging to ALLAH and ALLAH is our owner.and our Lord... servant can go to serve others or choose between masters ...but it is not the meaning of being (ABDU ALLAH)

O God! Forgive me for my sins and show me Mercy and save me from the hellfire!

The Slave of God is higher than the Servant of God.

I am a slave of God.

Because, I am utterly dependent upon God in this life and the next, and in Him I am utterly relied upon. God owns me. He has me by the neck totally, like all other things. He is my God.

And I obey God’s Commands at all times, praise Him day and night, worship him, prostrate myself in submission to Him. I am in utter awe of God.

And to Him Alone do I pray and get answered, and Him Alone do I ask for help and get helped.

And when I listen to the Quran, I bow down myself, or I cry, or I raise my hands and start praising God, either while reciting the Quran with the reciter or by just listening to it.

In God I fear, in God I trust, and in God I put my listening, and in Him do I put my hope for forgiveness of my sins.

Furthermore, my knowledge and experiences and consciousness and history and relationship with God is Prophetic and Grand.

Thus, I am among the most highest believers on the face of this earth.

As for the disbelievers, I am not equal to them nor am I the same as them.

Even among my fellow believers, I am not alike.

God Favors and Chooses and Blesses whom He Wills and and God elevates whomever He Wills and God does whatever He Wills (Quran), and all thanks is due to God Alone, and He has the Most Right of being praised by me, until my death, leaving not a single day.

To God is our certain return, and to Him lies the Final Judgment and Decision.

I be flexing on these disbelievers with my praising of God, all of them shall see and know, God is the Most Great.

And I enjoy it.

I enjoy that they hear me.

Any and all kaffirs, they better not play with me, I can and will destroy them utterly by my beautiful brown Believing eyes, 1 look, the infidel will say, I testify and bear witness that God exists and that Islam is the Truth.

To God is our Certain return, and in Him we have Believed, and to Him we prostrate ourselves until death tales our life.
